Staff and residents of The Lodge specialist dementia unit at Buckshaw Retirement Village, Chorley, will be putting their best foot forward for charity on Sunday September 21 by taking part in a Memory Walk organised by the Alzheimer’s Society.
The Memory Walk is the Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual event to raise money to support people with dementia and their carers. Walks are held throughout the country on or around World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21.
About 30 staff and residents of The Lodge will walk in Blackpool, covering a 3.5 mile route from the North Pier to the South Pier and back again. They will be accompanied by the Buckshaw Village Youth Band who will perform along the route.
One walker who will not find the event taxing is 13-year-old Shireen Durnan, sister of Chris Durnan, Team Leader at The Lodge.
Shireen, who lives in Chorley, climbed Mount Olympus during the Olympic Games four years ago, has completed the Three Peaks Walk, climbed Mount Etna walked around Ayers Rock in 100 degree heat and crossed the bridge over the River Kwai.
Lorraine Haining, Head of Dementia Services at The Lodge, said: “No doubt Shireen will be leading the way as the rest of us follow at a more sedate pace. Of course, it’s all about raising money for people with dementia so that we can all play a part in helping to improve their lives.”
